If you want to be more productive without sacrificing your wrist, this guide will help you choose the best ergonomic keyboard tray for you.

Why Do You Need an Ergonomic Keyboard Tray?

Typing at a desk might require a keyboard tray for ergonomic keyboard to help you stay comfortable and avoid feeling tired.

Without one, you might experience problems like:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in your wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed.

This pressure can make the hand and fingers feel numb, tingly, and weak. As the condition progresses, you may also experience pain or discomfort in the wrist and hand.

Neck, Back and Shoulder Pain

This discomfort often stems from strain on muscles and joints caused by slouching, leaning forward, or hunching over while working at a desk.

Symptoms may include stiffness, tension, and achiness in the affected areas, which can significantly impact daily activities and overall well-being.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis happens when the tendons, which connect muscles to bones, get inflamed or irritated. It often occurs from repetitive movements and overuse, like typing for long periods without breaks.

During this period, you might feel symptoms like:

• Pain: You might feel a dull ache or sharp pain in the affected area, like your wrists or elbows.
• Swelling: The area might look swollen or feel tender to the touch.

How to Choose the Best Ergonomic Keyboard Tray

Choosing the best ergonomic computer keyboard tray is about finding one that fits your body and how you work. To assist you, here's how to perform the task:

1. Choose the Right Platform

Before you start exploring different ergo keyboard trays, it is essential to determine the platform you will be using. In return, this will prevent strain or discomfort during use.

There are different types of platforms, and these are:

• Standard Size Platform: A standard-size platform typically accommodates a keyboard and mouse comfortably. This provides enough space for natural wrist positioning and movement. It fits most standard desks and workstations, offering versatility for various tasks.
• Compact Size Platform: Compact platforms are ideal for smaller workspaces or those focusing solely on keyboard usage. They offer a snug fit for the keyboard, promoting a compact setup that maximizes available desk space while still supporting ergonomic typing positions.
• Large Size Platform: Large platforms are beneficial for users who require additional space for accessories or prefer a broader typing area. They accommodate a keyboard, mouse, and other items such as a wrist rest or writing pad.

2. Compare Sitting Desk Vs. Standing Desk

Understanding the difference between sitting and standing desks is essential because it impacts your posture and comfort while using a keyboard tray. Your choice between the two depends on factors like personal preference, work requirements, and health considerations.

However, if you haven't decided what's best for you, follow some tips below:

1. Assess Your Work Style: If you spend most of your time seated, a sitting desk may be more suitable. Conversely, if you prefer standing or have a height-adjustable desk, a standing desk could be a better fit.
2. Evaluate Ergonomic Features: Look for desks that offer ergonomic features such as adjustable height settings and tilting capabilities. These features allow you to customize the desk's position to match your body's natural alignment, reducing strain on your wrists, arms, and back.
3. Consider Workspace Layout: Take into account the layout of your workspace and how the desk will fit into it. Ensure there's enough room for the desk, keyboard tray, and other essential items without feeling cramped or obstructed.
4. Factor in Budget and Preferences: While standing desks offer various benefits, they can be more expensive than traditional sitting desks. Make a decision based on what aligns best with your needs, budget, and workspace requirements.

3. Watch Out for the Tray's Attachment

The attachment mechanism of the keyboard tray is an essential aspect to consider. Paying attention to the tray's attachment is crucial because it determines how securely and comfortably the keyboard tray fits onto your desk or workstation.

There are generally two types of attachments, including:

• Clamp-On Attachment: A clamp-on attachment secures the keyboard tray to the edge of your desk using adjustable clamps. It's versatile and suitable for most desks, providing a stable and adjustable mounting solution without the need for drilling or permanent installation.
• Screw-On Attachment: Screw-on attachments involve fastening the keyboard tray directly to the underside of your desk using screws. This method offers a more permanent and secure mounting option, ideal for heavy-duty use or when a stable platform is essential.

4. Check the Size of the Keyboard Tray

Knowing the size of the keyboard tray is crucial because it ensures it fits comfortably within your workspace and accommodates your typing needs. Additionally, it helps optimize desk space and enhances overall comfort during extended computer use.

That being said, here are some ways you can follow:

1. Measure Your Desk Space: Before purchasing a keyboard tray, measure the available space on your desk where you plan to install it. Consider the width and depth of the tray to ensure it fits without overcrowding or obstructing other items on your desk.
2. Consider Keyboard and Mouse Placement: Choose a tray size that comfortably accommodates both your keyboard and mouse. Ensure there's enough space for the mouse to move freely without feeling cramped or restricted, promoting smooth and comfortable navigation.
3. Account for Additional Accessories: If you use additional accessories like wrist rests or writing pads, opt for a larger tray size that can accommodate these items comfortably. This ensures you have enough room for all your ergonomic essentials without sacrificing functionality or comfort.

5. Don't Forget the Slides

The slides of the keyboard tray play a vital role in its functionality and durability. Choosing high-quality slides ensures that your keyboard tray will last for years to come.

That being said, look for these features you can check when checking an ergonomic keyboard tray:

• Smooth Glide Mechanism: Look for keyboard trays equipped with smooth glide mechanisms that allow for easy adjustment without resistance or sticking. This enables you to position the tray precisely where you need it for comfortable typing.
• Locking Mechanism: Consider trays with a locking mechanism that secures the tray in place once adjusted to prevent accidental movement. This feature ensures stability during use, reducing the risk of the tray shifting or sliding out of position while typing.
• Weight Capacity: Check the weight capacity of the slides to ensure they can support the weight of your accessories without bending or sagging. Choosing slides with a higher weight capacity ensures durability and longevity, minimizing the need for frequent replacements.
